This design of this elastic is the perfect example of what can be done on a Jacquard machine. This type of machines was invented by a French man, Joseph Marie Jacquard. They are used for the production of sophisticated patterns. With this pair, you will also get a piece of industrial history.

Today the machines are mostly computer programmed but in the early days, perforated cards were used to program them.
